DU Student’s Mentorship Experience Featured in CBS Chicago Report

Tycree Watson, a sophomore at Dominican University, was featured in a Black History Month report from CBS Chicago on how a mentoring organization helped him prepare for college and begin achieving his goals in higher education.
As a high school student, Watson began receiving mentoring and advising services from OneGoal, a Dominican University partner. His advisors remained with him through his first year at Dominican and one still reaches out to see how he is doing, he said.
"I think mentorship allows for people to see different paths in which they wouldn't see," Watson told CBS.
Also interviewed for the piece was Dr. Barrington Price, CEO of DU’s Chicago Campus, who spoke of the benefits of mentoring in order for marginalized communities to achieve success.
Price has also served on OneGoal’s Illinois Regional Advisory Board. Dominican University Trustee Melissa Connelly, MAT ’08, MA Ed ‘13, is CEO of OneGoal, and she is also featured in the news piece.
As for Watson, he is studying economics with a goal of working in finance and delving into politics. He told CBS he’d like to become the president of the United States.
An experience that stands out to him at Dominican is the way his professors build relationships with their students, he said.
“It seems they enjoy what they do and because they enjoy it, it makes me want to learn with them,” Watson said.
