Compassionate service defines Maria Sarango’s time at DU.

An aspiring attorney and champion for immigrant rights, Maria embraced an internship with Beyond Legal Aid, using her bilingual skills to translate documents for clients, including materials for a successful arbitration case.

She’s also a volunteer with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, assisting clients with government requests for work permits and temporary protected status, and she’s learned about worker justice and advocacy through a UCLA Labor Center fellowship.

At Dominican, Maria helped organize a Beyond Borders showcase for students to openly share their immigrant stories, and she joined classmates in her Writing as Social Action course in hosting an event connecting students to immigrant resources.

A former DU student trustee, Maria says she enjoys bringing individuals together to empower and inspire each other.

“I want people to know that anything is possible, regardless of your immigration status,” she says.
