Trinidad and Tobago: A Gateway to the Caribbean Islands

Apply

Dominican University is pleased to offer a study abroad program to Trinidad and Tobago: A Gateway to the Caribbean Islands. Participants will experience the unique culture and traditions that exist in this part of the world, within the context of the African diaspora.

Academic Program

Trindad and Tobago: A Gateway to the Caribbean Islands, is a three-credit study abroad program that meets during the spring semester, and travels to the islands during spring break. On-campus classroom sessions and orientations are followed by 8 days of travel in the two southern most links in the Caribbean chain, Trinidad and Tobago, which lie close to the continent of South America. Tobago is much smaller, with an area of only 115 square miles, about 30 miles long and about 10 miles at widest point. They both achieved their independence from the Great Britain in 1962, and became a republic in 1976. While there, students will receive lectures from professors at the University of West Indies. Students will visit African heritage sites, Courland Monument, forts, Buccoo reef, Englishman’s Bay, Bloody Bay, Main Ridge Reserve (the oldest protected rain forest in the western hemisphere), Youruba Village, Mystery Tomb, Carol Gardens, Nylon Pool and other sites. The course will also study: a) The Calypso, which was first recorded in Trinidad in 1914; b) The steelpan, which first appeared in Laventille, Trindad, in 1914; c) Black Power uprising in Trinidad, which began in 1970 under Stokley Carmichael, a native of Trinidad. Each student is required to keep a daily journal of the experience and write a term paper.
