Dominican University President Glena Temple was featured in the Daily Herald Business Ledger's Coffee Break column. She discussed Dominican's biggest challenges for the coming year, hot trends in higher education, and what keeps her up at night, among other topics.

When asked about her business mantra, she advised, "I strive to model servant leadership, focusing on serving those with whom I work and the communities of which we are part."

First-generation-to-college students often have challenges not faced by students whose families have a history of college attendance. They often struggle with navigating college applications, financial aid and registration--in some cases while learning English. Many of these students have additional concerns about disappointing parents who have sacrificed so much to help them go to college. 

Through its federally funded TRIO grant program, Dominican University offers first-generation and low-income students resources to help them persist and graduate on time. 

HBS Dealer, a trade publication for the hardware and building supply industry, included an article about the Brennan School of Business' partnership with Rust-Oleum. Through the partnership, MBA students were tasked with developing a marketing strategy designed to boost brand awareness of Rust-Oleum's Krud Kutter product. 

"The student presentations were top notch," said Frank Glowacki, Rust-Oleum's brand director. "They came up with ideas we never considered. They were really buttoned up."

Live theater and live audiences will return to Dominican this weekend, with the production of "Mamma Mia." Director Krista Hansen, chair of the theater arts and music department, said in an article in the Chicago Tribune/Oak Leaves that there were a number of reasons why she chose to present "Mamma Mia" as the first live show since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last year. 

River Forest, IL – Dominican University will present Guatemalan filmmaker and social activist Luis Argueta in the Annual Lund-Gill Lecture on Thursday, November 18 at 7 p.m.  Argueta will share his personal experiences as a child impacted by the CIA’s 1950s Cold War activities in Guatemala, and discuss his decision to speak out about social injustices in his birth country--and in the U.S., his adopted country. The lecture will be held in the Martin Recital Hall.

Dominican University will host its annual Fair Trade Fair—just in time for the holidays—on Wednesday, November 10 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Parmer Hall Atrium, 7900 W. Division Street. The event will feature a wide range of products created by international artisans and sold by the following Chicago area organizations dedicated to sustainability, ethical production methods, and fair wages for workers across the world.

The Wednesday Journal wrote an article about Dominican University's celebration of Dia de los Muertos with the creation of four ofrendas across campus honoring loved ones who have passed. The ofrendas were built by many students and represented their experiences of loss and hope during the past year and a half, a period marked by COVID-19, racial reckoning and gun violence. 

Lisa Petrov, Title V project director and assistant professor of Spanish, co-authored, with Gina Garcia, an article in the American Psychology Association's Journal of Diversity in Higher Education. In "Becoming a racially just Hispanic-serving institution: Leveraging HSI grants for organizational identity change," the authors discuss how the 569 colleges and universities designated as HSIs can move from Latinx-enrolling to Latinx-serving, a status that requires institutions to become race-conscious and equity-minded.

Dominican alumna Maisie Sparks '10 wrote an article in Christian Science Monitor about a conversation she had with two neighbors concerning race and childhood racial experiences. The conversation was prompted by media attention on the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre.
